Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival

HVSF Presents The Tempest

by William Shakespeare

Directed by Jim Calder

Audiences of all ages will revel in the circus-like atmosphere created by HVSF’s young artists in our 90-minute version of Shakespeare’s enchanting tale of a magical island full of monsters and fairies. When a storm washes his royal enemies ashore, Prospero has a chance to take his revenge – or will he conjure a happy ending instead?

Twelve years ago Prospero, the Duke of Milan, was overthrown by his brother, Antonio, with the help of Alonso, King of Naples, and the King’s brother Sebastian. Prospero and his baby daughter Miranda were put out to sea and they landed on a distant island. By the use of his magic art, Prospero now rules this island. The sprite Ariel and savage Caliban serve him.
Now a ship is caught in a violent storm, and Prospero tells Miranda that he conjured the storm because his mortal enemies are all on that ship. Castaways begin to turn up. First comes Alonso’s son Ferdinand, who immediately falls in love with Miranda. Prospero tests their love by enslaving Ferdinand. As the other castaways appear on the island, Prospero must decide if he will take revenge on his enemies, or conjure a happy ending instead.

Sinbad 2015

Sinbad: One of Comedy Central’s Top 100 standup comedians of all time!

Sinbad arrived on the comedy scene with a “hit’em in the face” style of comedy that has kept audiences laughing in the aisles. Sinbad’s comedy is about stories, and boy does he tell stories!  Ranked by Comedy Central as one of the top 100 standup comics of all time, Sinbad has built a loyal following by taking audiences’ painful trials or embarrassing tribulations of day-by-day life, throwing them back in their faces & causing an uproar of comedic hysteria. He can also make it sound profound without being profane.

Sinbad says he learned “funny is funny” and that masters of dirty comedy Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor & Lenny Bruce could all work clean without losing a step. After the roaring success of Sinbad’s WHERE U BEEN? special on Comedy Central, the network also aired his most recent MAKE ME WANNA HOLLA special. Sinbad became internationally known for his starring appearances in hit movies like Jingle All the Way, playing opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger; Houseguest co-starring the late Phil Hartman, and let’s not forget his film debut Necessary Roughness…where he assures us, he did none of his own stunts!

Don McLean

#1 recording artist and Songwriters Hall of Famer Don McLean takes the Paramount stage!

Playing his beloved classics:

* Vincent (Starry Starry Night) * And I Love You So * Castles in the Air * Crying * Tapestry * Since I Don’t Have You * American Pie *

Famed for his perennial "American Pie," an elegiac eight-and-a-half-minute folk-pop epic inspired by the tragic death of Buddy Holly, Don McLean is a legendary recording artist known for his impeccable live performances. Just as his iconic hit song was inspired by a musician he admired, McLean was himself the inspiration for Lori Leiberman’s “Killing Me Softly” after she saw him perform at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. “Killing Me Softly” later became a #1 hit for Roberta Flack in 1973 and reached #2 when The Fugees recorded the song again in 1996.

McLean has proven his versatility and longevity across the decades; 1980's Chain Lightning became a Top 30 album, spawned a Top 10 smash with its cover of Roy Orbison's classic "Crying," and his original songs "Castles in the Air" and "Since I Don't Have You" both also reached the Top 40. “American Pie” was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 2002 and Don McLean was inaugurated into the National Academy of Popular Music Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Django Festival AllStars

The Django Festival AllStars & Friends!

“Imagine a stage filled with contemporary Django Reinhardt descendants and you'll get a sense that the collective talent pool on the bandstand is larger than the Arc de Triomphe!"

    The Wall Street Journal

The Festival, started in 2000,found there was huge interest in Django's style of HOT JAZZ.  It has gone on to be a highly anticipated event twice a year, now in its 15th year, accompanied by major tours.  The Allstar bands emerged out of the Festival which is also produced by Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta.

The Django Festival AllStars carry on the legacy of the brilliant gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt who was part of one of the most famous musical partnerships in European history with virtuoso jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli.

The AllStars, from France, bring the audience to their feet with lightning-fast guitar fingerwork on standards such as "Minor Swing" and also put the crowd in a romantic mood with gorgeous melodies, hit songs of the past such as Django's "Nuages". The program includes many new original compositions that take the music beyond.

Django's inspiration was Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington--sheer virtuosity with exuberant showmanship leaving a crowd breathless as it is with The Django Festival AllStars.  Leonardo DiCaprio has become one of the biggest fans as is George Benson, Woody Allen...every great jazz guitarist was inspired by Django…. Keith Richards, B.B.King, to name a few.

This November at the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, The DJANGO FESTIVAL ALLSTARS will be headed by legendary French gypsy guitarist, DORADO SCHMITT along with virtuoso violinist Pierre Blanchard who “captures the true romantic fire of Grappelli", and Ludovic Beier on accordion and accordina, who "was breathtaking and beautiful" says Will Friedwald of the Wall Street Journal.  On rhythm guitar is Francko Mehrstein, cousin of Dorado, and Xavier Nikq , on bass...all are from France where the Festivall started with the Hot Club Quintette.

"Expect buoyant rhythm, blinding technique, solid entertainment" says Nate Chinen of the NY Times.

DJANGO held it all together like a magnet, as do his descendants…. The Django Festival AllStars.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic

“There’s Gonna Be A P-Funk Party At The Peekskill Paramount On The Night Before Thanksgiving!"
George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-’60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine captured over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) in the 70’s and released three platinum albums. Clinton gradually put together a collective of over 50 musicians recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic. While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a funk free-for-all, blending influences from the godfathers (James Brown and Sly Stone) with freaky costumes and themes inspired by ’60s acid culture and science fiction, producing the most dazzling, extravagant live show in the business.
Clinton's greatest achievement stemmed from his relentless dedication to funk as a musical form. Funk had been around for what seems like forever, deeply rooted in the music traditions of New Orleans and the Blues of the Deep South. Clinton took Funk to new heights, blending elements of Jazz, Rock, Pop, Classical and even Gospel into his productions, eventually developing a unique and easily identifiable style affectionately called “Pfunk.” Clinton’s inspiration, dedication and determination resulted in the elevation of “funk” music to complete recognition and acceptance as a true genre in and of itself. Today his audiences are a cross-cultural mix of music lovers from 8 to 80.
The Orange County Register wrote earlier this year, "George Clinton brought his metaphorical mothership to the Observatory in Santa Ana on Saturday, and while the stages are smaller than those his classic Parliament Funkadelic collective played at their peak – no room or budget for an actual spaceship today – one thing remains perfectly true: There still ain’t no party like a P-Funk party.” For more go to
